Roadworthy Inspections for light and heavy vehicles

Why are Safety Certificate Inspections Important?

As a responsible driver, it is essential to ensure your vehicle meets all safety standards before you take it on the road. In Queensland, a safety certificate inspection is required under certain circumstances to ensure the safety of drivers and other road users.

If you're a new vehicle owner or planning to transfer your vehicle registration to Queensland from another state or territory, you must obtain a safety certificate before you can legally drive on the roads. Also, if your vehicle is unregistered, you need to obtain a safety certificate to get it registered.

The safety certificate inspection is conducted by an authorised inspection station and covers several key areas, including brakes, steering, suspension, body rust or damage, windscreen, and lights. The inspection is mandatory for cars, motorcycles, and trailers, including caravans, weighing between 750kg and 4,500kg, as well as any other vehicles up to 4,500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM).

Here are some key things you need to know about safety certificate inspections in Queensland.

The safety certificate inspection is essential to ensure your vehicle meets all the required safety standards and is safe to be driven on the road. These inspections help to prevent accidents and protect drivers and other road users. Additionally, the safety certificate inspection ensures that unregistered vehicles are inspected before registration is granted, ensuring that they are in safe and roadworthy condition.

What is a Safety Certificate Inspection?

In short, it's a comprehensive inspection of your vehicle to ensure that it's roadworthy. In Queensland, all vehicles must be registered and have a safety certificate inspection to be deemed safe for the road.

When Do You Need a Safety Certificate Inspection?

If you're transferring ownership of a vehicle in Queensland, you no longer have to have a safety certificate before putting a vehicle up for sale but YOU MUST obtain a safety certificate before transferring registration to the new owner. You also need a safety certificate if you're transferring your vehicle registration to Queensland from another state or territory or re-registering an unregistered vehicle.

What Does a Safety Certificate Inspection Cover?

The safety certificate inspection covers many essential components of your vehicle to ensure it meets all the required safety standards. These components include tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, body rust or damage, windscreen, and lights. During the inspection, the authorised inspector will thoroughly check each component to ensure it meets the necessary standards. If any component fails the inspection, the vehicle will be deemed unroadworthy and will require repairs before being re-inspected.

How Do You Get a Safety Certificate Inspection?

So, how do you go about getting a Safety Certificate Inspection? You'll need to take your vehicle to an approved inspection station such as Southey's Mechanical Repairs in Dalby. An inspector will perform a thorough check of your vehicle. They'll be looking at everything from the tyres and brakes to the engine and transmission. If everything is up to standard, they'll issue you with a safety certificate.

The inspection usually takes about 30 minutes, and the inspector will issue a safety certificate if the vehicle passes. If your vehicle fails the inspection, the inspector will provide you with a report outlining the issues that need to be fixed. Once you've made the necessary repairs, you can take your vehicle back to the inspection station for a re-inspection.

How Long Does a Safety Certificate Last?

In Queensland, a safety certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000km, whichever comes first. If you don't sell your vehicle or transfer ownership within that time, you'll need to get a new safety certificate inspection before the old one expires.

It's important to note that a safety certificate inspection is not the same as a vehicle service. While they do overlap to some extent, a safety certificate inspection is solely focused on ensuring your vehicle is safe to drive on the road. It's always a good idea to get your vehicle serviced regularly to keep it in top condition and a regularly serviced vehicle is more likely to pass a Safety Certificate Inspection than one that has not been as a reputable mechanic will always let you know if there are problems with your vehicle - especially any safety related issues.

Machinery Certificates - Certificates Of Inspection

A Certificate of Inspection (aka COI) is a periodic or programmed inspection designed to check minimum vehicle safety standards in heavy vehicles, licensed tow trucks, buses, taxis, limousines and booked hire vehicles.

For a Certificate of Inspection (COI), your vehicle type will determine which one of two places to go to - either a Transport and Main Roads-approved inspection station or a Transport and Main Roads inspection centre. You can find a list of vehicle types and authorised inspection stations on the Queensland government's website.

Prior to presenting the vehicle for a Safety Certificate Inspection or a commercial or heavy vehicle for a Certificate of Inspection, it is highly recommended that it be inspected for any deficiencies and have the necessary fixes performed to avoid the requirement of a follow-up examination.
